Glyph is a voice-first Egyptian Arabic learning service. This policy explains what information Glyph handles, why it is needed, which service providers help process it, and the choices available to you. Glyph does not sell personal information or use it for advertising or cross-company tracking.

Information you provide

  • Account and profile information: the name you choose for lessons, your Sign in with Apple account identifier, and an email address or Apple relay address when Apple makes one available.
  • Voice and learning content: speech used for pronunciation, transcription, and live practice; answers you speak or type; Journal entries; Ask Glyph questions; feedback; and other content you choose to submit.

Information created while you use Glyph

  • Learning state: lesson progress, review schedules, vocabulary and sentence encounters, settings, and the evidence needed to resume your learning.
  • Subscription information: product, entitlement, purchase state, renewal or expiration dates, and transaction events supplied by Apple and RevenueCat. Glyph does not receive your full payment-card number.
  • Usage and reliability information: a pseudonymous account ID, feature and lesson events, request outcomes, token or audio usage, app and operating system versions, performance measurements, errors, and crash diagnostics.

How information is used

Glyph uses information to:

  • provide guided lessons, review, speech recognition, playback, Ask Glyph, and live practice;
  • personalize language forms and restore eligible learning state across devices;
  • verify subscriptions, enforce plan allowances, prevent abuse, and keep service costs bounded;
  • answer support requests and process account deletion;
  • understand product use and improve reliability without placing learner content in automatic analytics.

Automatic Product analytics does not store raw speech, transcripts, spoken answers, Journal prose, or Ask Glyph messages. Those materials may still be transmitted to a provider when needed to perform the feature you requested.

Shared app statistics

The updated Product app introduces statistics used only to improve Glyph: feature counts, coarse daily activity, speed ranges, and fixed error categories. Statistics do not include speech, transcripts, sentence text, deck names, Journal text, or Ask Glyph messages. Individual reports are combined into shared daily totals as they arrive; Glyph does not retain the reports with account, profile, session, or device identifiers, or build individual activity histories from them.

App statistics count feature use, speed, fixed error categories, and signup steps. Collection starts after you continue past the name screen, which explains the default-on totals and has a Settings link with an App statistics switch. You can also turn it off under Profile → Privacy → App statistics. Earlier steps and actions are not backfilled. Signup totals are grouped by the date reporting started; they are not unique-person counts or individual signup histories.

Existing learners who have not seen this broader notice remain outside the new reporting until it is shown and acknowledged. Learners already past Lesson 3 receive it on a later app open; others receive it when starting Lesson 3. Earlier choices to turn reporting off are preserved. One control stops both aggregate streams and clears pending device reports without limiting lessons or access. Older app versions may still use the pseudonymous analytics described above. Individual automatic crash reporting is disabled in the updated path.

Requests are authenticated to protect the service and respect your reporting choice. Account identifiers are used transiently for those checks, separate from the shared totals. A one-use random retry token prevents duplicate counting, but is not saved with your account or the activity it counted. Shared totals cannot be removed by account because they have no account link. Essential learning recovery, subscription, allowance, security, and service-operation records remain separate.

Where permitted, Glyph relies on its legitimate interest in improving the service for this limited statistical processing, with the right to object through the off control. Statistics are not used for advertising, cross-company tracking, decisions about individual learners, or third parties' own purposes.

Voice and AI processing

Voice features may send microphone audio to OpenAI or ElevenLabs for transcription. Ask Glyph and responsive practice may send the relevant question, transcript, recent context, and allowed learning context to OpenAI. Text may be sent to ElevenLabs to generate speech. These requests are limited to the information needed for the feature and are separate from Glyph's content-free automatic analytics.

AI-generated explanations, transcriptions, and responses can be incomplete or wrong. Avoid including sensitive personal information in speech, tutor questions, Journal entries, or feedback.

On-device information and recovery

Some learning records are primarily stored on your device. Glyph's account recovery synchronizes deterministic progress and settings, but intentionally excludes Journal text, Ask Glyph messages, retained recordings, live-call turns, and raw learner answers. Removing the app deletes local information subject to ordinary device backup behavior; it does not by itself delete your Glyph account or cancel a subscription.

Website translations

The public translation tool sends the text you submit to OpenAI to translate it between English and Egyptian Arabic. It does not record audio or add translations to app learning records or automatic analytics. Translations are AI-generated. OpenAI applies its own processing and retention practices.

An essential, anonymous browser cookie remembers the free translation allowance for up to 30 days. Shared quota records use pseudonymous visitor identifiers for up to 30 days and hashed network identifiers for up to 24 hours to limit abuse and service costs. Quota records do not contain your translation text.

Website guide

The dictionary and conjugation falcon can run independently as a reference lookup. This mode searches Glyph's public stored data and recordings. It does not use AI, send questions to Frase, set a guide visitor cookie, or save lookup transcripts. The current word or verb stays in page memory to support follow-up lookups.

When general AI chat is enabled, the website guide uses Glyph's stored dictionary and conjugation reference for direct word and verb lookups. Those questions are not sent to Frase. For other questions, Frase processes your message using Glyph's published website content. Frase records conversations, which Glyph can review to understand visitor questions and improve website content. Answers may be incomplete or wrong. Avoid sharing sensitive personal information in the guide.

In general AI chat, an essential, signed anonymous cookie identifies this browser for up to 30 days to manage guide usage and keep conversations separate. Glyph uses anonymous visitor and network counters to limit requests, plus aggregate diagnostics identifying the answer engine and outcome without question text. Direct lookup transcripts are not stored by Glyph. Chat messages remain in page memory while the page is loaded; Frase maintains its own conversation records.

Optional lesson videos

Some learning guides offer TikTok videos. TikTok's player loads only after you choose Watch the lesson. Loading it connects your browser to TikTok, which receives connection information such as your IP address and browser details and may use cookies or similar technologies under its own Privacy Policy. Opening an original-video link also takes you to TikTok. You can read the written guides without loading a player or visiting TikTok.

Service providers

Glyph uses these providers to operate the app and website:

  • Apple for app distribution, Sign in with Apple, subscriptions, and device services;
  • Google Firebase for authentication, server functions, storage, recovery, security, analytics infrastructure, and crash reporting;
  • RevenueCat for subscription status and entitlement management;
  • OpenAI for requested transcription, Ask Glyph, and responsive language features;
  • ElevenLabs for requested speech recognition and speech generation;
  • Vercel for website hosting, aggregate website analytics, and performance measurement.
  • Upstash for the website translator's anonymous quota counters.
  • Frase for the website guide and its conversation records.

Information may also be disclosed when required by law, to protect the service or its users, or as part of a business transfer subject to appropriate safeguards.

Retention

  • Learning, account, and subscription records remain while your account is active or until you delete it, unless a record must be kept for security, legal, or financial reasons.
  • Older pseudonymous detailed Product analytics records are scheduled for deletion after 90 days. Shared daily statistics and aggregate summaries are retained for up to 13 months. Pending statistics and one-use retry tokens expire within 90 days; retry tokens contain no account or activity data. Scheduled deletion is asynchronous.
  • Operational quota, replay, and request receipts generally expire within 90 days, with many technical records expiring sooner.
  • Optional cancellation feedback may be retained for up to 180 days.
  • Apple, Firebase Crashlytics, and feature providers apply their own operational and legal retention practices to information they process.

Your choices

You can manage microphone and notification permission in iOS Settings. You can manage or cancel an Apple subscription from your Apple Account. In the Product app, account deletion is available under Profile → Privacy → Delete my account and data. Account deletion removes the Glyph account and associated Glyph-owned Product data; it does not cancel billing through Apple.

Security and international processing

Glyph uses authenticated interfaces, access controls, encryption in transit, App Check, and restricted administrative access. No system can guarantee absolute security. Providers may process information in countries other than the one where you live, subject to their terms and applicable safeguards.
